Lockdown Procedures
Lockdown Drill Information for Parents
At our school, we regularly practise different safety routines to help children learn what to do in a calm and confident way. Just as we have fire drills, we also have lockdown drills. These are simply another type of safety practice.
A lockdown drill is used when it is safer for everyone to stay inside the classroom rather than go outside. We explain to the children that this might be needed for situations such as:
- Very bad weather, like a sudden storm
- A loose animal on the school grounds
- Something unexpected happening outside that means it’s better to stay indoors for a short time
The children are taught that this is just a practice, and teachers guide them through it gently, in an age‑appropriate way. The routine usually involves staying quietly in the classroom, closing the door, and listening carefully to their teacher’s instructions—very similar to how we practise lining up safely for a fire drill.
We make sure the drills are calm, reassuring, and help children understand that these routines are simply part of keeping everyone safe at school.
To help them remember the steps, we also have friendly, child‑appropriate posters around the school.
