Classes 2,3 and 4 joined 500 other pupils across Essex to take part in an interactive art workshop where they learned about Peter Bruff, an influential Essex engineer from the 1800s. The children enjoyed taking part in the live workshop.

As part of their history topic, class 3 designed and created their own Roman shields. They had to plan their design first and to make it a bit trickier, they had to make their design symmetrical. I think you'll agree they did a great job!

WRITING ABOUT VOLCANOES IN CLASS 3 2nd Feb 2026

Class 3 have been writing vivid description Mount Vesuvius erupting in Pompeii. All week they have been writing and editing their work, making sure they have used a variety of techniques including powerful verbs, adverbs, fronted adverbials, and adjectives. Finally they used the laptops to type their finished piece. The last step is to illustrate their writing with a drawing of a volcano. The writing will then be displayed outside class 3.

This week the children in class 1 have been reading the story of 'Superworm'. They have learned how worms really are super at making compost to help our plants grow. They have created their own wormeries and had great fun digging for worms to put inside.

The children in class 3 enjoyed a science lesson where they were looking at reflective and non reflective surfaces. Children wrote their name and they were only allowed to look in  the  mirror whilst doing so - not as easy as they thought it would be!

Some children from class 2 have been benefitting from their daily Gym Trail sessions. These sessions help children strengthen their bodies, improve their coordination for tasks like handwriting, and 'reset' their focus so they can feel calm, confident, and ready to learn. And it is so much fun!

Class 3 were very happy to start their squash lessons again. For the Year 3 children, this was their first lesson and Year 4 children were building on everything they learned last year. This lesson was all about ball control and how to hold and use the racquet correctly. Not as easy as you'd think...the lesson included kneeling, laying down and standing, all whilst keeping the ball on the racquet! They ended the session by seeing who could hop on one leg and still keep the ball safe! Great first lesson of the year class 3!

The children have made their own Super Potatoes using real potatoes and craft materials such as paper, googly eyes, pipe cleaners. They have investigated a tray of frozen 'Evil Peas'. They have scooped, mashed and mixed them as well as seeing what happens when they hit the tray (the peas jump!) We then made jelly to trap the Evil Pea in and will eat them when they have set!

Class 4 are learning about how plants reproduce as part of their science topic on life cycles. They dissected a flower to find all the different elements including the stamen, stigma, style and ovary.

Class 3 and 4 children got everyone in the Christmas spirit, singing a variety of traditional and modern Christmas carols and festive favourites! The children worked hard to learn all the songs, and Year 6 children narrated, sharing the story of Christmas with everyone. The evening ended with a rousing rendition of 'Feliz Navidad' which got everyone dancing in the aisles! Thank you to everyone who took part and those who came to watch. Special thanks also to Mrs Denny, Mrs Guernari and Miss Butler for all their hard work behind the scenes!

As part of our 'Watch us Grow' project, today every child in the school helped plant nearly 1,000 bulbs on the school grounds. They were helped by some amazing volunteers including Quincy's mum and dad, Archer Wicken's mum, Henry Smethurst's Nanny, Miss Dale and Chris Osbourne from the Local Council. The children had a fantastic time and are very excited to watch the bulbs bloom in the Spring. Well done to everyone and THANKYOU from all at Baynards.

Class 2's Art topic was 'Map it out' - they made abstract art out of printed maps of their journey to school. They enjoyed printing and then using their own prints to create a piece of abstract art. Well done!

Class 3 are investigating the physical properties of rocks. They are able to name the different rocks such as clear quartz, gypsum and basalt. They are also able to name the 3 types of rocks and how they are formed.

MAPPING THE SCHOOL HABITATS 18th Nov 2025

10 children were supported by Louis from RHS to map the various habitats on the school grounds. They used resources including flow charts to identify and name the different habitats. Once this was completed, a digital copy was created and shared on the Education Nature Park website. This is the first step in our journey to improving the biodiversity of our school grounds.

We were incredibly lucky to be contacted by BBC Essex radio who brought Pudsey Bear in to visit the children. Their reaction to seeing Pudsey was VERY enthusiastic and broadcast live on radio! What a great way to start the day! The children raised money for Children In Need this year in many ways- they paid £1 to come to school in non-uniform, organised a yummy bake sale and paid money to throw wet sponges at the School Council members! Not sure who got the most wet - the School Council or those queuing in the rain! We are still counting the pennies and will give you a total as soon as we have it. Thank you everyone for supporting such a worthy cause!

VISITORS FROM THE BUDDHIST CENTRE 17th Nov 2025

We were delighted to meet Jenny and Nick from the Colchester Buddhist Centre. They came to school to talk to the children about their beliefs. The children were all very interested and particularly liked Nick's story about the elephant and the dog (which included some audience participation!). The children enjoyed singing one of their favourite songs, 'A Little Bit of Kindness' to Jenny and Nick and also welcomed the opportunity to reflect on times they have shown, or been shown kindness during a short period of meditation. Thank you Jenny and Nick!

We had so much fun celebrating Michael Rosen Day! We joined an online event where we watched him perform 'Chocolate Cake' which was really funny! We then made upde up our own silly poems. Everyone laughed, joined in, and used their imaginations. It was a wonderful morning full of reading, rhyming, and lots of smiles!

The children had great fun today using shaving foam and foam discs to build towers. They used the foam to stick the discs together and tried to build the biggest tower! Such a fun activity which encouraged the use of mathematical language!

Some children have been working with Mrs Alcon to improve their writing. They are using Colourful Semantics which is a fun and visual way to help children understand and build sentences. It uses colours to represent different parts of a sentence, helping children understand how words fit together to make meaning.

We were delighted to invite Dan into school to teach all the children how to play the African drums. It was so much fun and sounded lovely all day! The children learned how to create and follow a rhythm and had the chance to freestyle too! What a fabulous day!

Class 1 went on an autumn walk on Tuesday to look for signs of autumn. We looked for bare trees, collected leaves and conkers, and spotted berries on trees. The only thing on our checklist that we were not able to tick off was a squirrel!

The children have been doing really well in their PE lessons. They have been practising finding spaces in the hall, joining in with listening games and using different parts of our bodies to move around. We finished with a follow the leader game. We also felt our hearts beating :)

CPR SMART PROGRAMME FOR SCHOOLS 22nd Oct 2025

This week, children in Years 5 and 6 learned how to perfom CPR and how to use a defibrillator. Mrs Dale and Miss Hempstead were trained by Jon at Essex & Herts Air Ambulance (EHAAT). EHAAT have launched a free "CPR Smart" programme to train teachers and students in schools across Essex and Hertfordshire. The evidence-based programme aims to improve cardiac arrest survival rates by equipping the next generation with life-saving CPR and defibrillator skills. The children were all really engaged and developed greater confidence in knowing what they could do to help in an emergency situation. Well done to you all!

Class 1 and 2 enjoyed a visit from 2 ladies from the WI. They had heard about a decline in oral health amongst children and wanted to do something practical to help. They very kindly made every child in EYFS and KS1 a bag, which they filled with a toothbrush and tube of toothpaste. The children were really pleased with their gifts! Many thanks to all the ladies involved!

We were really pleased to invite Alim Kamara, a British-Sierra Leonean rapper and storyteller, into Baynards for the morning recently. He spent the morning with the children where he combined storytelling, rap, and motivational elements to teach children about self-esteem, identity, and history. The children were all very engaged and enthusiastic! Thanks you Alim!

Class 3 had a fantastic day at the Mercury Theatre for Creative Industries Day. The children learned about the many industries available within the theatre, including costume design, script writing, acting and dancing and set design and creation. Thet also got a sneak peek at some of the props which will be used in the panto this year. What an amazing way to spend a day!
